YSL: The square-cut bullet (which kinda also looks like a diamond shape) is a dream. The sharp edges and shape and slimness of the bullet make applying a perfectly-defined cupid's bow totally idiot-proof. The texture is another winner. Despite the matte finish, the lippie isn't at all dry, and glides on smoothly. The first application is already pretty much perfect, without the need to touch up the edges of your lips. For an intense, leathery matte finish, apply layer two and you're vamp, glam, thank you m'am. Shu Uemura: The Shu lippie has a thicker consistency which makes it a challenge to apply evenly, and at one go. But the careful dabbing with the ergonomic applicator that fits the curve of the lips and maybe a little clean-up around the edges are worth it, because you get a beautifully thick, matte finish, with rich and intense colour. YSL: Survived our makan test and five whole hours with one single application. Impressive.Shu Uemura: What is this sorcery? This survived a heavy, oily lunch, a snack at tea time and coffee o'clock (without leaving a print on our mugs)! No reapplying needed. You probably need a lipstick remover to completely clean it off, though. Laneige: Not too amazing. Had to reapply after an encounter with a coffee cup. Mamonde: Beware of stains, even on your food. We had to reapply it three times in a span of five hours.

YSL: Understated glam, a classic with an edge. A super-slim beauty with a shiny gold cap and a matte bod. Hawt. Classy.Shu Uemura: Love the matte black case which ombres into the shade of the lippie contained within. Laneige: If your favourite color is red, you’ll love this. Minimalistic and basic design that works. Mamonde: Basic red chic with a cool twist in the form of one slightly flat side.

YSL: With 25 different shades, ranging from browns and reds to corals and pinks, we love the inclusiveness and how it's been “developed for every skin tone”. Shu Uemura: Comes in 16 shades, mostly in deep, earthy tones, which suits the texture and finish of the matte lippie. Laneige: 10 Shades of Red is what we'd like to call this collection (with the exception of No.4, Pingpong Pink).Mamonde: Definitely the most cutesy in terms of colours of the lot. The nine shades here are extremely vivid and lively.

And the winner is... the YSL Beaute Rouge Pur Couture The Slim. Yes, it ain't cheap at 54 bucks, but when one swipe does the job, this slim stick will go a long way (and maybe save you money in the long run?). Also, the staying power means fewer applications, and the unique bullet which helps you get a perfectly-defined lip means less wastage. The quality of the lipstick means you really do get what you pay for, and the 25 shade range is impressive. The packaging also made us feel high-end boss-ass-chick AF. A close second is the Shu Uemura Matte Supreme ($43). Love the earthy hues and the slick, sophisticated matte finish that does not budge, no matter what you eat, drink or kiss.
