Chinese Actor Chen Feiyu, Who is The Son Of Director Chen Kaige, Gives Up US Citizenship; Declares Love For China
Two years ago, the 21-year-old rising star was accused of having dual citizenship, which is illegal in China.
Famed Chinese director Chen Kaige’s son Chen Feiyu made his showbiz debut in 2017 with the film Secret Fruit. His performance was lauded by critics and the then-17-year-old was hailed as one of China's most promising young stars.
In 2019, he was admitted to the prestigious Beijing Film Academy, which counts stars like Vicki Zhao, Yang Mi and Huang Xiaoming among its alumni. Kaige himself and his fellow auteur Zhang Yimou also graduated from the school.
But his admission into the Beijing Film Academy didn't come without controversy. Around that time, netizens found out that he was an American citizen and they accused him of having dual citizenship, which is illegal in China.
Kaige also came under fire as netizens felt that he “didn’t impart the right values to his son”.
Fast forward to today and Feiyu, who is now 21, announced through his studio that he has given up his American citizenship and is officially a Chinese citizen.
His statement read, “[Feiyu] has always been steadfast in his love for the great motherland, and he will continue to share positive energy [and] contribute to the motherland.”
This piece of news has been met with positive response from Chinese netizens who say that the young actor “has proven how patriotic he is with his actions”.
They also expressed hope that his move will “encourage other Chinese who are based overseas to come back home”.
