Chinese blogger who spread fake story that this grandpa & granddaughter are married sentenced to jail
Back in Nov 2021, a photo of a young and beautiful girl in what looked like a wedding dress and an aged man in white was widely circulated on the Chinese internet. Netizens had a field day gawking at their apparent age gap.
Netizens were further drawn to the story when a Chinese blogger, who went by the moniker "Brother Fei is in Dongguan", spiced things up and wrote on Chinese social media platform Toutiao that the photo showed a 73-year-old "groom" who showered his 29-year-old “bride” with gifts that included 880,000 yuan (S$165,327) in cash, a new two-bedroom apartment and a luxury car.
By then, it was reported that the post had been read by more than 470 million people on various platforms.
However, the story turned out to be fake with a lady named Nicki Jun coming out on Xiao Hong Shu to debunk the viral news. She revealed that the picture was of her and her grandfather and that they took it when he came to Shanghai to visit her.
She said the fake news had caused her a lot of distress and that she wanted to see the rumour monger get punished accordingly by law.
It turns out that "Brother Fei is in Dongguan", whose real name is Wu Moufei had chanced upon the pictures on Nicki’s account and made up the story to attract fans and increase traffic to his account.
Moufei has since been found guilty of defamation and endangering social order by the courts in Dongguan, and was sentenced to a year in prison.
