Edmond So’s Wife Winnie Lau, Who Calls Herself An Animal Lover, Sparks Outrage For Promoting Dog Repeller
Hongkong singer-actress Winnie Lau, the 50-year-old wife of Grasshopper member Edmond So, 56, became a target of online vitriol after one of her recent live streams.
According to reports, the 50-year-old and her husband were walking their poodle, Scooby, when she went live.
During the broadcast, Winnie said Scooby tends to go a little wild when they're out. She then said it's why she carries with her an ultrasonic dog repeller, which she called her "handy tool", to scare away stray dogs.
Winnie, who calls herself a dog lover, was almost immediately attacked by netizens, who criticised her for being unkind and unloving towards strays.
So much for calling herself a dog lover...
Winnie has since apologised for her words, saying: "My cat was once bitten to death by stray dogs, that's why [I'm] afraid of overly passionate strays. So when I bring [my] smaller pets out, I would bring a dog repeller..."
She emphasised that she doesn't use it on any stray dog she sees, and "would only take it out when [their] lives are threatened."
However, her apology did not placate the fuming masses, with one netizen saying: "Your dog is the one that's untamed, that's your problem."
Pet lover no more?
Two days ago (June 6), Hongkong pet pharmacy Petmacy announced that they have ceased working with Winnie, who was their brand ambassador.
According to their statement (see below), Winnie initiated the termination of their collaboration after some discussion with the brand.
Petmacy also stressed that "regardless of breeds, all lives deserve to be treated well" and that they "respect and love all pets."
Many netizens have praised the brand for their decision. One such netizen wrote, "Please choose someone who really loves animals to be your ambassador", while another said, "Great job, totally support [you] cutting her off."
