Fann Wong On Crème De La Crème ‘Cling Wrap Mousse’ Incident: The Contest Is A Journey, Not The Destination
The judge and host issued a statement in response to the ballyhoo surrounding the semi-final elimination.
There was an unexpected twist in the semi-finals of baking competition Crème De La Crème when Angie, hailed one of the favourites to win the contest, was eliminated because of an unfortunate mix-up.
Indignant netizens feel that Angie, who performed consistently well in the competition, deserved to be in the finals and that her elimination was unfair as she was penalised for another contestant's error.
The incident happened when Angie’s mousse base was mistakenly taken by another contestant, Ean, during the preparation process. All four contestants’ bases had been prepped and placed in the freezer earlier. Ean reached out for the mousse base ahead of Angie.
Ean apologised when Angie realised he had taken her tray. At that point, Ean was already using her mousse base. The judges then asked them if they wanted to make another batch of mousse. Both of them declined as they had already made a failed batch prior to the mix-up. Angie decided to proceed with Ean’s tray.
Angie was eliminated after the judges, including Fann and Jeanette Aw, found pieces of cling wrap in the mousse base of her Strawberry Tart, deemed a deal-breaker by the actresses.
In response to the backlash, Fann Wong, who is both a host and a judge on the show, shared in a statement: The judges asked [Ean and Angie about how they wanted to proceed] when the incident happened. The contestants came to a consensus to continue using the mousse that the other party had prepared. We respected their decision.
The statement added, I also hope that the contestants won't pay too much attention to the opinions of others. The contest is a journey for them to learn and gain experience and it is not the destination. There's still a long path ahead for everyone.”
In response, Mediacorp has clarified that all contestants had been assigned colour stickers to identify their ingredients and trays. Mediacorp respects that the judges’ decision is final and the company also called out netizens who have been cyberbullying Ean, Fann and Jeanette, stressing that it does not condone cyberbullying.
