HK Actress Alice Fung Says Her Late Dad Openly Favoured Her Younger Sister Fung Bo Bo; Once Said Bo Bo’s The Star, Not Her

Veteran Hongkong actress Alice Fung, 77, shared about her childhood in a recent interview, revealing that she was often slighted by those around her, including her parents, in favour of her younger sister, screen icon Fung Bo Bo, 68.

Alice and Bo Bo share the same dad, veteran Hongkong actor Fung Fung, who passed away in 2000, but have different mums.

Bo Bo made her acting debut at the age of two in the 1956 movie Love vs Love, which was written and directed by Fung Fung. She went on to star in over 200 movies, including classics like The Great Devotion (1960) and Endless Love (1993).

Alice said in the interview that she used to think that there was nothing much to compare between her and Bo Bo since they were 10 years apart. However, the people around them just would not stop with their backhanded remarks.

“My mum once said, when people praise you for being pretty, you shouldn’t think that you’re really pretty ‘cos the one who’s [truly] pretty is your younger sister. When people look for me to do a photoshoot, it’s ‘cos I have my younger sister by my side and she draws people in. So I’ve never compared myself with my younger sister. What’s there to compare? She’s the lead character, not me,” Alice said.

The actress also brought up a couple of remarks her dad had made to her.

According to Alice, Fung Fung once exclaimed: “It’s fine for the entire factory to power off entirely to wait for your younger sister, but if it’s for you, then it’s not okay!”

Perplexed, Alice then asked Fung Fung, who was the “boss", why they could do so for Bo Bo, but not her.

And then, Fung Fung replied: “She’s the star! You're not!”

Alice is still active in the industry today, appearing in multiple projects every year

Alice said that she felt really hurt by his words. Unfortunately, even the people around Alice treated her that way.

She recounted an incident when the workers were helping her with her clothes. However, once Bo Bo arrived, everyone rushed off to help Bo Bo instead.

Naturally, Alice begun to harbour resentment against her father. At one point, the hate overflowed into other aspects of her life, from her career to her family.

However, after getting married and starting her own family, Alice became more understanding of her father, who had his career as a lead actor cut short in 1949 after the left side of his face was paralysed in an accident.
