Local chain Joy Luck Teahouse, which was opened in 2020 by veteran TVB producer Robert Chua, uses Hoover’s recipe for its egg tart, which is one of the bakery’s most popular offerings. Robert, 75, tells 8days.sg that the closure will not affect his chain’s operations. “The recipe has already been given to us,” he says.

Hoover Cake Shop’s owner struggled with ill health
According to Robert, Hoover’s owner Chow Ping-kuan had been struggling with a bout of ill health, which affected his ability to work. “The poor old man is over 80 years old and has worked so hard; he had to retire,” Robert shares.

He adds that Ping-kuan’s children, who are based in the US, “don’t want to take over” their father’s bakery.

Robert, who is based in Singapore and Hong Kong, is returning to HK tomorrow to discuss with Ping-kuan on adapting more of his recipes for the Singapore market. “I will see what are the right [products] for Singapore. Egg tart is the most important, and we already have the recipe,” he says.
