“I really hope Huang Biren knows who I am now lah”: YES 933 Jock & surprise Top 10 winner Jeff Goh on what he would say to the actress who thought he was from Ch 5

“This one is very special. Is he from Ch 5?” said Huang Biren when she took the mic to announce the sixth Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste at last night's Star Awards.

“Is he from Ch 5?” she asked again, her eyes searching the audience for the winner.

“Jeff Goh,” she said in that confident Huang Biren manner, as Yes 933 jock Jeff Goh, who is definitely not from Ch 5, got up from his seat, his hands flashing the victory sign while surrounded by his equally ecstatic fellow DJs.

“Actually, when she was saying that, I was half hoping it was me and half expecting it was me,” laughed the very bilingual Jeff when 8days.sg spoke to him after his surprise win.

Jeff, of course, hosts the immensely popular The Daka Show with fellow surprise Top 10 Most Popular Artiste winner Chen Ning and Most Popular Rising Star Gao Meigui. In 2010, he was also named the Most Popular Radio Personality at the Singapore Radio Awards.

So what would the youthful looking jock, who turned 40 last September, say to Biren?

“I hope from today onwards, she knows who is Jeff,” he chuckled. “You know, in radio or in showbiz, there are a lot of Jeffs so a lot of people don’t know what I look like. I really hope Huang Biren knows who I am now lah.”

Jeff definitely did not expect to go on stage on this year.

“It’s the first year so many DJs are in this competition and I’ve already heard from the TV artistes that it’s very difficult to get an award. So when you see people who are supposed to be on stage but are not… for me, it’s a huge surprise,” said Jeff.

So how many times did he vote for himself?

“I tell you okay, I didn’t sleep after midnight,” said Jeff. [Ed: Unlimited voting kicked in for the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes category on midnight on the day of the awards.]

“I know there are a lot of people who voted for me and I was afraid of letting them down if I went to sleep. I think I voted for myself until 2am?"

While he thinks his own effort helped, he believes his majority of votes came from 933’s big pool of listeners.

His win, he feels, is a triumph for DJs.

“I feel that from now more listeners and Singaporeans can pay attention to radio. I hope moving forward more radio personalities have more chance to be on screen and have more exposure,” he beamed.
