It’s showtime! Beetlejuice 2, starring Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortega, set for Sept 2024 release
Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!
Beetlejuice 2 will be out in cinemas on Sept 6, 2024, in the US, per Variety.
The long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult horror-comedy will again star Michael Keaton as the titular poltergeist (whose name is actually spelled Betelgeuse) and Wynona Ryder as goth chick Lydia Deetz.
They’ll be joined by Wednesday breakout Jenna Ortega as Deetz’s daughter and Justin Theroux in a yet-to-be-disclosed role.
The original Beetlejuice is about a playful ghost (Keaton) summoned by a home’s recently-deceased owners (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) to drive out the new occupants (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O’Hara played Lydia's parents).
The movie introduced Harry Belafonte’s ‘Day-O (Banana Boat Song)’ to a whole generation, made US$74.7 million (S$100 mil), spawned an animated series, won an Oscar for Best Make-up, and spawned an animated series and a Tony-nominated stage musical.
Burton and Keaton would later team up again for Batman and its 1989 sequel, Batman Returns.
According to Deadline, production will kick off in London on May 10. Burton is directing again. The script is by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who worked with Burton on Wednesday; Danny Elfman is handling the score.
Beetlejuice 2 is opening on the same day as Marvel’s Blade, starring Mahershala Ali as the vampire slayer. Filming on Blade was expected to start next month but was stalled by the writers’ strike.
Keaton's latest, The Flash, where he reprises the role of the Dark Knight, lands in cinemas on June 14.
