The Late Lung Shao-Hua Called The Golden Bell Awards "A Piece Of S***" When Wilber Pan Won Best Actor Over Him In 2011

How did he and Wilber resolve their feud the following year?

News of veteran Taiwanese actor Lung Shao-Hua’s passing on September 14 sent shockwaves across showbiz. The 68-year-old made his debut at the age of 26 in 1979 and was in the industry for 42 years before this tragic death.

The actor, who is known for his straightforward personality, was also nominated multiple times for various acting accolades at both the Golden Bell and the Golden Horse Awards.

He won his first Golden Bell Award for Best Actor in 2013, two years after he infamously described the awards show as “a piece of s***”.

That year, both Shao-Hua and Taiwanese-American singer Wilber Pan, who was 31 then, were nominated for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film.

At that time, Shao-Hua was considered the frontrunner for the award. However, the award eventually went to Wilber. You know, kind of like how Joanne Peh beat Jeanette Aw to the Best Actress award at the 2009 Star Awards?

But of course, the backlash and subsequent media furore was way, way, bigger.

Wilber was considered an acting rookie then, and the public didn’t exactly hold back their criticism about his win. Many deemed Wilber as being “undeserving of the award, and Wilber also teared up and apologised to the other nominees multiple times during a post-win interview.

However, no one was more unhappy than Shao-Hua, who later found out that he’d been passed over in favour of Wilber as the judging panel wanted to “encourage newbies”.

In a fit of anger, Shao-Hua declared: “The Golden Bell Awards is worthless, and a piece of s***”.

Many also saw his comment as a personal attack on Wilber as well.

Of course, Shao-Hua later clarified that he was not actually angry at Wilber, but merely mad at the judges for their decision.

In any case, their feud was soon resolved the next year.

Shao-Hua was nominated again for the Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film award, and Wilber was invited back as an award presenter.

For his segment, Wilber had to interact with the Best Actor nominees and he put an end to his 'rivalry' with Shao-Hua by hugging the latter, and planting a kiss on his face.

Shao-Hua later quipped in an interview: “When [Wilber’s] mouth came towards me, I was afraid that he’d kiss my mouth. He’s really brave, I think I’m really in love with him”.
