Myolie Wu Accused Of Being Pro-HK Independence For Calling China “China” Instead Of “The Mainland”
It's getting ridiculous, no?
Earlier this week, Hongkong actress Myolie Wu, 41, penned a lengthy comment standing up for her husband, 45-year-old businessman Philip Lee, after a hater dubbed him the “King of Kept Men” for taking care of their children while she’s busy working.
If you thought her explanation was enough to shut naysayers up, think again.
A group of netizens known as “Xiao Fen Hong” (“Little Pink”), a term used to describe Chinese cyber-nationalists, took issue with one part of her statement, using it to accuse Myolie of being pro-Hongkong independence.
Actually, they took issue with one word.
In Myolie’s statement, which was written entirely in English, she clarified that Philip “has been working hard and supporting his family for many many years”, shutting down rumours that he’s basically a male tai tai who lives off his famous wife.
She also revealed that the reason he has been spending more time with their sons, three-year-old Brendan, two-year-old Ryan, and four-month-old Liam, is ‘cos she’s “been working in China” while her family stays in Hongkong.
The “Xiao Fen Hong” we mentioned earlier were not happy that Myolie referred to China as “China” instead of “the Mainland”, claiming that this demonstrates her support for the separation of Hongkong and China.
They are now demanding an apology and urging others to boycott the brands she endorses, and for brands to cut ties with her (like what happened to Dee Hsu after she was accused of “making use of the Olympics to show her support for Taiwan’s independence”).
Although Philip’s entire post has been deleted along with Myolie’s comment, her detractors continued to leave nasty remarks on her social media pages calling her “two-faced” and “a renminbi lover”, and asking her to “stop coming [to China] to make money”.
