Netizen Highlights Hawker Stall With “Poor Lighting” That Actually Sells Nice $2.70 Cai Png
One netizen named Kenny highlighted a cai png stall he patronised that sells cheap and good economic rice. In a post on Facebook foodie group Food We Eat N Share in SG, he urged people to “support this cai png stall managed by [elderly hawkers]” at North Bridge Road Market & Food Centre.
Hidden gem stall
Called Hup Heng Mixed Veg. Rice, the stall has bright red signage but is dimly-lit. From a distance, one may even mistake the stall for being closed, even though there are still plenty of home-style dishes left like handmade meatballs, vegetable curry, stir-fried pork and soy-braised chicken.
“Unfortunately due to the stall’s poor lighting, the food doesn’t look glamourous and vibrant but that doesn’t mean no good ya,” Kenny wrote. “[The dishes are] very homecooked type and more healthy too as it seems to me no MSG [sic]. And [the hawkers] are very honest and down-to-earth. The aunties are super polite and [their food is] super value [for money].”
Speaking to 8days.sg, Kenny said the longtime stall is “really backward-looking ’cos [its elderly hawker-owners] are the thrifty type and just want to make an honest living there.” He added: “But unfortunately, the lighting makes the food look not so nice and those who are new to the hawker centre won’t really fancy it.”
Cheap and good $2.70 cai png
In his post, Kenny also shared his box of takeaway cai png, which had toppings like omelette and potato wedges. He wrote: “My tapao today only $2.70.... Tapao from them also feel happy [smiley emoji]. Do try and support ya.”
Hup Heng Mixed Veg. Rice is at #01-90 North Bridge Road Market & Food Centre, 861 North Bridge Rd, S198783. Open daily 8am-4pm.
