Ooh x Tom’s Palette Mala Chocolate Ice Cream Taste Test: Nice Or Not?
Ooh offers some of the tastiest mala chips in town, in our opinion. Meanwhile, Tom’s Palette at Shaw Tower is known for its wacky ice cream flavours with a mostly local slant, like Nasi Lemak and Chee Cheong Fun.

We opened our tub and spot chilli seeds flecked within the dark brown cream. The ice cream is made with 56 percent dark chocolate and Ooh’s special mala spice blend, which includes Sichuan peppercorns. On first lick, there’s the flavour of milky choc. This is followed by a sudden hit of heat, which spreads across the tongue, plus the unmistakable floral, slightly medicinal quality of mala. The combination of spice from the distinctive peppercorn and sweetness of the ice cream is a tad strange. But we quite liked the smooth, creamy texture of the dessert.
Not bad! We’re game to try this once and perhaps buy a tub to punk our chilli-averse pal. But the fiery mala spice here kinda overwhelms the chocolate. So we’ll stick to having our mala fix with chips and other savoury food instead. Available from $4 a scoop and $18 a pint, till Dec 31.
