Oscar-Nominated Steven Yeun Joins Marvel’s Thunderbolts In Key Role

The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun is set to join to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to trade reports, the Oscar-nominated actor of Minari has joined the cast of Thunderbolts, which follows a team of bad guys on a mission for the government. (Think DC’s The Suicide Squad, but from Marvel.)

The rag-tag group includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus (as Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine), David Harbour (as Red Guardian), Sebastian Stan (as Bucky Barnes), Florence Pugh (as Yelena Belova), Olga Kurylenko (as Taskmaster), and Wyatt Russell (as John Walker).

No word on what part is Yeun is playing is but it’s speculated his character will play a key role in the MCU down the road. Ayo Edebiri, the breakout star of the restaurant drama The Bear, recently joined the production in an undisclosed role.

Thunderbolts, to be directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns), is expected to start filming this June and be released in July 2024.

It will end the MCU’s Phase 5, which began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and continues with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels (that’s the one with Park Seo-Joon!), Captain America: New World Order (that’s the one with Harrison Ford), Blade and Deadpool 3.

But if you know Marvel, just because it’s reported doesn’t mean it’s necessarily true. It’s only official when they announce it at some event like Comic-Con or D23.

Yuen’s most recent appearance was in Jordan Peele’s UFO thriller Nope. He will be re-teaming with his Okja director Bong Joon Ho for the sci-fi flick Micky 17, alongside Robert Pattinson.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now in cinemas. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives on May 4 while The Marvels is due Nov 9.
