Peng Guan Bak Kwa Opens Hawker Stall Selling Bak Kut Teh & BBQ Pork
Peng Guan is a relatively new player in the bak kwa scene, founded only in 2014. It’s co-owned by millennial Zhang Ziyue, 35, who started his barbecued pork business as a hawker stall at Chinatown Complex Food Centre.
Bak kwa + bak kut teh
He has since expanded Peng Guan into a hawker chain with four stalls, though the outlets are slightly different from his original kiosk — other than bak kwa, each stall also serves dine-in-friendly food like chicken rice and dim sum. For his latest branch in Bukit Batok Ave 4, Ziyue is offering bak kut teh and bak kwa at a promotional price of $10 for 500g until Jul 3.
2-in-1 hawker stalls
As for why he’s setting up stalls with a “2-in-1” concept, Ziyue says: “Our bak kwa is takeaway food, so most coffeeshop [landlords] will not let us rent the stall only for selling bak kwa as it’s unable to help the coffeeshop drive [dine-in] crowds.”
To secure his kopitiam stalls, Ziyue turned to serving “local delights and local specialty food” along with his signature bak kwa. He started with a coffeeshop unit in Ang Mo Kio selling dim sum last April, before opening a second $1.50 dim sum branch in Jurong East in August. Another outlet - this time with roast chicken rice - opened in Woodlands Close in November 2021.
Not selling chicken rice for now
However, Ziyue is temporarily pausing sales of chicken rice at his Woodlands stall due to Malaysia’s chicken export ban. “We’re trying to figure out [what kind of] chicken we can use so as not to affect our quality and taste,” he says. This affected his business, but Ziyue shares that he’s also offering his $10 for 500g “bak kwa special promo at our Woodlands outlet to draw the crowds back.
Bak kut teh menu
His latest Bukit Batok stall serves up Pork Rib Soup ($6) with a “premium pork rib” version going for $9. You can also order sides to go with the bak kut soup and rice, such as You Tiao ($1.50), Salted Veg ($2), Braised Peanuts ($2) and Braised Egg ($1.20). There’s also Braised Pig’s Trotter ($6 for half portion; $12 for full), Dong Po Meat ($6 for small; $8 for big) and Sesame Oil Chicken ($6).
