Popular Taiwanese Porridge Eatery Goldleaf Restaurant Reopening In New Location After Hiatus
Unfortunately, the restaurant had to close in September this year when its lease expired. But Goldleaf reassured its customers that it was not goodbye, as it was looking for a new location to reopen.Fortunately for porridge fans, the eatery has found a new space, and will soon open its doors again. Goldleaf’s second-generation owner Karen Pan tells 8days.sg exclusively that the new location will be “at a foodie area near Kallang.”
She hopes to reopen the restaurant this weekend, though she shares that it is “pending authorities' approval.” The exact address will also be announced at a later date, as Karen explains: “My signage is not up yet.”
Shifted locations several times
Goldleaf first started operating in Orchard Road back when the famed shopping street was still lined with shophouses. Over the years, the restaurant had served many celebrity customers, including late Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng and Ah Jie Zoe Tay. It later shifted to a shophouse at Amoy Street, and to Katong Square before it went on hiatus.
What to expect at the new location
According to Karen, the menu and prices will remain unchanged when Goldleaf reopens. “[This is] to thank everyone for their support for over 50 years. At the same time, we will be launching new dishes as well as prep for Chinese New Year,” she says, adding that the new dishes are “still under R&D.”
The decor will also “remain classy as what we had always been, with a modern touch.” Karen reckons that her family is open to setting up more outlets “when the right opportunity comes.”
Porridge with sweet potatoes
The Taiwanese-style porridge that Goldleaf offers is similar to local Teochew muay. But instead of plain gruel, it is cooked with chunks of sweet potatoes and served free-flow in a claypot. Accompanying dishes are ordered a la carte for sharing. Due to the Covid-19 Circuit Breaker in 2020, the restaurant also started an islandwide delivery service.
Taiwanese comfort food
The recipes for Goldleaf’s signature dishes were originally created by a team of Taiwanese chefs. This includes its most popular puffy Chye Por Omelette (pictured above), Braised Pork Belly with mei cai (preserved salted vegetables), Prawn Rolls, Steamed Pork Patty, Claypot Beancurd and Oyster Mee Sua.
