Rainie Yang Says It's “Extravagant” To Eat Seafood In Taiwan; Netizens Dig Up Old Photos Of Her Feasting On Seafood In Taiwan

It’s no secret that netizens can be a rather unforgiving bunch. And with social media being an actual archive, it’s not a hard for anyone to pull out receipts when one contradicts what they say.

In this case, Taiwanese singer Ranie Yang, 38, and her comments on… seafood.

Rainie, who is now living in China with her husband Li Ronghao, recently appeared on Chinese variety show The Journey of Poetic Soul (还有诗和远方), where she unintentionally drew the ire of Taiwanese netizens.

When one of the guests said that a certain variety of fish couldn’t be found in Taiwan, Rainie replied, saying: “I didn’t eat a lot of seafood in Taiwan. My family was struggling financially when I was younger. In fact, eating seafood is considered to be extravagant there.”

Rainie said that eating seafood in Taiwan is considered to be "extravagant"

Taiwanese netizens were upset with her claim, and brought up the fact that Taiwan is surrounded by the ocean and has a lucrative fishing industry. They went on to dig through Rainie’s social media pages and found many posts of her eating a wide variety of seafood, including crabs, oysters and sashimi.

One netizen even sarcastically commented: “I found several pictures of Rainie feasting on seafood in Taiwan. You were really living so extravagantly here!”

Rainie and Cyndi's Omakase meal

Aside from that, netizens also found a collage of photos from a birthday meal she had with Cyndi Wang last year at an upscale Japanese restaurant which serves Omakase meals from TWD4000-$8000 (S$180-$360).

However, there were also netizens who spoke up for Rainie, saying that she was probably referring to the time when she was young and could not afford such meals.

So... she's wrong for saying she's Cantonese?

Rainie's appearance on the show has created all kinds of trouble for her.

She was also slammed for her comment about her heritage.

“I grew up in Taipei, but I am Cantonese, and my husband is from Bengbu… the purpose of coming to this show is so I can learn about more cultures," said Rainie, whose dad is Cantonese.

The comment about being "Cantonese” for some reason, did not sit well with Taiwanese netizens.

“Why don't you say you are African? After all, humans first came from Africa” wrote one netizen.

That, coupled with her comments on seafood, has led to a barrage of hate directed to her on her social media pages.

As of press time, the comments section on Rainie’s Facebook and Instagram have been disabled.

According to Chinese media, she was also spotted by fans at the Beijing Capital International Airport looking extremely dejected after the controversy.
