Seth Rogen Weighs In On Marvel Movies: As An Adult With No Children, They’re “Just Not For Me”

Seth Rogen is not a fan of Marvel movies.

This might come as a shock, especially since the Knocked Up actor alongside producing partner Evan Goldberg is behind a bunch of TV series adapted from comic books (Preacher, Invincible, The Boys).

Speaking to Total Film, Rogen said, “I think that [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige is a brilliant guy, and I think a lot of the filmmakers he’s hired to make these movies are great filmmakers.

“But as someone who doesn’t have children… It is [all] kind of geared toward kids, you know? There are times where I will forget. I’ll watch one of these things, as an adult with no kids, and be like, ‘Oh, this is just not for me.'”

This is why Rogen’s shows are edgier and of the NSFW variety while the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are either PG or PG13, you know, family-friendly. (Note: Eternals received an M18 rating in Singapore because of its LGBTQ content.)

That said, Rogen said that if it weren’t for the success of the MCU, his own shows won’t have taken off.

“Truthfully, without Marvel, The Boys wouldn’t exist or be interesting. I’m aware of that,” Rogen said. “I think if it was only Marvel [in the marketplace], it would be bad. But I think it isn’t — clearly. An example I’m always quoting is, there’s a point in history where a bunch of filmmakers would have been sitting around, being like, ‘Do you think we’ll ever make a movie that’s not a Western again? Everything’s a Western! Westerns dominate the f***ing movies. If it doesn’t have a hat and a gun and a carriage, people aren’t going to go see it anymore.'”

Maybe Rogen will change his tune when Marvel puts out its first R-rated title, Deadpool 3, next year.

Preacher, Invincible, and The Boys are available on Amazon Prime Video — but not in Singapore, where these shows are R21 and Amazon Prime Video doesn’t stream R21 content. Unlike Disney+, HBO Go and Netflix, they have yet to introduce parental locks to prevent children from accessing grown-up material. (Hey, Amazon, are you guys working on it or what?)

Rogen will next be seen in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated The Fabelmans, opening in cinemas on Feb 9.
