Several Male Chinese Idols Found To Have Bought Engagement Rings From A Chinese Jeweller, Turns Out, They Were Victims Of Identity Theft

Several Male Chinese Idols Found To Have Bought Engagement Rings From A Chinese Jeweller, Turns Out, They Were Victims Of Identity Theft

In China, you can easily buy the personal information of your fave celeb online.

Chinese jeweller Darry Ring has come under fire after it was discovered that ID numbers belonging to celebrities have been illegally registered on their website.

Darry Ring markets their engagement rings as a once in a lifetime gift, and requires buyers to register their name and ID number at the point of purchase.

Customers are also only allowed to buy one ring from the company in their lifetime. Romantic, yes, but isn’t it strange for a jeweller to not want repeat business? Haven’t they heard of second and third marriages? But we digress.

The company also had a dedicated site where you could check if someone has bought an engagement ring from Darry Ring simply by entering their ID number.

Yes, they had a dedicated site.

Male stars such as Song Weilong, 22, Xia Zhiguang and Meng Zikun, both 21, as well as Yan Xujia and Ren Shihao, both 20, were found by netizens, who have access to their ID numbers, to have bought engagement rings from Darry Ring. 26-year-old female idol Lu Keran was also registered Darry Ring’s database.

Waitaminute… how did these netizens get hold of something as personal as a celeb’s ID number?

In case you didn't know, in China, the personal information of celebs, including their identification numbers, can be easily bought online.

This shady practice has been going on for years, and fans have been caught doing the creepiest things, like stalking an idol’s flight schedule, with such illegally obtained information.

But back to the Darry Ring scandal.

While some fans were distraught at finding out that their idols have secretly gotten engaged , more rational netizens surmised that this was probably the work of trolls, catfishers or overzealous fans and that these idols were definitely not getting married.

At press time, Wenlong and Xujia have denied buying engagement rings from Darry Ring.

Netizens have also banded together to expose Darry Ring’s lousy business model, where just about anyone can register a ring under someone else’s name.

In one of the screenshots posted by a whistleblower, a netizen pretending to be customer asked Darry Ring if a picture of their ID had to be sent over in order to register their purchase. The fake customer was then told that a photo was not necessary, and that sending over the ID number alone was sufficient.

Netizens who have bought stuff from Darry Ring have also backed up how “very simple” the registration process is.

Darry Ring has since responded by suspending the search function of their website and have pledged to “upgrade their system” to “better protect personal information and privacy”
