8days

Taiwanese comedian Dong Zhicheng dated a bar hostess for eight years and she ended up taking over his house

Taiwanese comedian Dong Zhicheng recently appeared as a guest on Taiwanese variety show Chop Chop Show where he shared about his past relationships.

The 56-year-old revealed that when he was younger, he often socialised and entertained clients at expensive bars. They would invite hostesses to drink with them and he would splash NT$150,000 (S$6.6K) a night.

He struck up a relationship a hostess and supported her for years in the hopes of helping her leave the trade.

“She was like a girlfriend,” he admitted. However, the woman latched on to him and one day, moved into his home unannounced.

"That’s when my nightmare began,” he said.

She tried to control him

As the woman had friends in working various bars and hotels, she would often ring them up to check on Zhicheng’s whereabouts and then rush down to drag him home.

"She would just barge in and say ‘Dong Zhicheng, come home!" he said, “I was furious.”

During their eight years together, he tried to break up with her several times, but she would always play the depression card and continued to cling on to him.

As the last resort, Zhicheng surrendered his home and moved out.

“I told her she could continue living in my house and to go find herself a boyfriend ‘cos I didn’t see a future for us. It was not because of her background, but that our feelings and relationship had changed,” he explained.

Soon after, she got herself a new boyfriend, who moved in with her.

“I even paid their rent for a year!” he said.

His drinking caused the breakdown of his marriage

Zhicheng later met his wife, Teresa Luo, when he attended an English class she was teaching.

They married in 1999 and divorced in 2020. They have a 14-year-old son.

During the show, he opened up about his drinking problem and how it had ruined his 21-year marriage.

All was well between the couple until he went to China to develop his career in 2018. He had to socialise often and started drinking, something which he hadn’t done in a long time.

He found himself drinking heavily and during the Covid-19 lockdown, he would drink at home. It was so bad his wife thought that he used working in China as an excuse to drink.

"I shouldn't have gone to China! I was there for three years… After I returned [at the start of the pandemic], my marriage was finished,” he said.

He was heartbroken when his marriage broke down and regrets his actions.

"You are responsible for the bad things that happen to you,” he said.

He added that he knows no amount of apologies can make his ex-wife change her mind, and hopes she takes good care of herself and their son.
