Tekka Hawker Stall Sells $1 Scallop Porridge & Chee Cheong Fun, Fried Beehoon At $1.20

Hawker stall Zhu Jiao Shu Shi at Tekka Centre has been around since the ’80s (Zhu Jiao is the Chinese name for Tekka).

And its menu prices are also straight out of the good old days, where you can still get a decent breakfast spread for under $2 despite the recent global inflation.

$1 porridge

Netizen Angie Eu recently posted about the stall on Facebook group Can Eat! Hawker Food. She raved about Zhu Jiao’s “very nice” porridge, which costs only $1. For that price, you get a bowl of gooey Hokkien-style peanut porridge topped with slices of fish cake, fried shallots and spring onions.

According to Angie, the porridge is cooked by “an elderly grandma” and even comes with “mini scallops”, which accounts for its tasty flavour.

$1 chee cheong fun

There’s also chee cheong fun for $1 on the menu, and house-made glutinous rice - another popular menu item - going at $1.50 a plate.

Fried bee hoon, $1.20

The generously-portioned $1.20 economical bee hoon at the stall is also pretty unique; you can request for your vermicelli to be doused in sweet red chee cheong fun sauce. Worth trying if you're planning to dine on a budget.
