Top 10 winner Desmond Ng is glad he joined showbiz only when he was 28 and not so 'stupid'

Desmond Ng definitely saw his popularity skyrocket after starring as the endearing and kind-hearted Hong Mao Dan in the hit drama Your World In Mine.
So we weren’t all that surprised when the 35-year-old went home with a Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste trophy at Star Awards 2023, which was held at Marina Bay Sands last night (Apr 2).
But when 8days.sg spoke to Desmond, who was also up for the Best Actor award last night, he confessed that he wasn’t particularly hopeful because he’d spent the past five years "anticipating and not winning." The last time Desmond won this award was in 2017.
"It's quite tiring lah," he admitted, adding that he decided to "let it be" and "didn't care about it."

8DAYS: You sounded like you wanted to cry when you mentioned your parents just now. Did you get them as well as your girlfriend to vote for you?
DESMOND: They always try their best to vote for me so I'm very glad and thankful.
Did you specifically do anything to get more people to vote for you?
I didn't do much, but whenever I met my friends I would say "eh vote already anot?" (Laughs) I would push them a little bit lah but whether they vote or not I don't know.
How do you intend to celebrate with your family and your girlfriend?
The next few days I'll be filming, so maybe next week? I haven't thought of anything yet. 'Cos for the past few years, I had a little bit of hope that maybe I could win Top 10 but the last one I got was six years ago. It was five years of anticipating and not winning, which is quite tiring.

You only joined showbiz when you were 28. Did you regret switching from getai to acting so late in your life?
I think no, because I was more mature when I joined at that age. I could absorb things faster and improve myself more quickly. If I had joined showbiz at an early age, like maybe in my 20s, I would get a lot of scoldings 'cos I was kind of stupid and trying to understand what life is. (laughs)
Do you like acting more than singing now?
No! (Laughs) Singing is still my favourite, of course.
