Trailer watch: Chris Hemsworth returns for more badass action in Extraction 2

Netflix has dropped the teaser for Extraction 2, the Chris Hemsworth-starring sequel to the 2020 actioner.

Hemsworth’s character, mercenary Tyler Rake, was presumed dead at the end of the first Extraction, and —  guess what? — he’s alive!

How is that possible? It’s the movies, baby, the movies! Anyhoo, Raker is off to another mission, this time in freezing Georgia (the country but the film was shot in Prague) where he’s hired to rescue the battered family of a ruthless ganger from the prison where they are being held.

The almost two-minute preview shows how Raker goes about doing his job — by beating anyone that gets in his way in what looks like a prison break. Clearly, Raker doesn’t take prisoners, so to speak.

There’s also a cool bit where Raker shoots down a chopper with a machine gun. It's just another day at the Tyler Rake office, dear.

Sam Hargrave is again at the helm of the mayhem, with Joe and Anthony Russo as producers. Hargrave previously worked with the Russos as a stunt coordinator on Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame where Hargrave was the stunt coordinator. Extraction was Hargrave’s directorial debut.

The first Extraction, released in April 2020 — aka the early days of a pandemic-caused global shutdown — was a big hit for Netflix. It was the most-watched original film premiere in the streamer’s history, with 99 million households in its first four weeks of release. (We were all stuck at home — what else could we do?!)

The Extraction 2 teaser arrived amid news of Hemsworth taking things slow after discovering, during the filming of his Nat Geo series Limitless, that he is genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Yeah, there was an intensity to navigating it,” the father of three said in a Vanity Fair interview in November. “Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we'll somehow avoid it.

“We all have this belief that we’ll figure it out. Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality.

“For me, the positive of it was like, ‘Right, if I didn’t know this information, I wouldn’t have made the changes I made.’

“I just wasn’t aware of any of it, so now I feel thankful that I have in my arsenal the sort of tools to best prepare myself and prevent things happening in that way.”

Last year, Hemsworth starred in Thor: Love and Thunder, and the sci-fi thriller Spiderhead, another Netflix release. He also did a cameo in Interceptor, an action flick starring his wife Elsa Pataky.

Extraction 2 will be out on Netflix on June 16. Watch the teaser here:
