TVB actor Mat Yeung, who was jailed for drink driving, was called 'prisoner' by a random stranger in public

TVB actor Mat Yeung, who was sentenced to 18 days in jail at the end of last year for drink driving, recently shared more about his prison stint and life after his release.

The 42-year-old, who stars in TVB drama Night Beauties, was also suspended from driving for two years and handed a HK$3,000 (S$520) fine for driving while intoxicated in August 2020.

In an interview with Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News, Mat said that he has been subject to online attacks but he doesn't think much about them.

The most memorable, he said, was when he was called “prisoner” by a random stranger on the street.

"I laughed it off,” he said. “Of course, some people came forward to tell me they support me. There are good and bad comments online, you have to remember the good ones.”

Mat said the first two days in prison were the toughest.

He could not get accustomed to the environment and was unable to sleep as the light in his cell was turned on 24 hours a day.

“I told myself what's done is done, this is your punishment. Don’t waste time mulling over things that you cannot fix, face it positively. The most difficult time is over, move forward positively in the days to come,” he shared.

Mat added that he will learn from his mistakes and remind himself not to err again. He also hopes to share his experience with those in need.

The past three years have not only been difficult for the actor, but also those around him.

Mat thanked his family, girlfriend Malaysian actress Lisa Ch'ng, as well as TVB for their support.

When asked if he ever thought of breaking up with Lisa, Mat’s reply was an affirmative “no”.

“The past three years, she has helped me fend off the media and unsavoury comments, and also supported me. She has done a lot for me and I am very grateful to her. Not every girl can do this and she never left me. I will take care of her for the rest of my life. Without her, things would be a lot harder for me," said Mat.

Mat and Lisa began dating in 2016 and reportedly pushed back marriage after the latter's dad passed away in March this year.
