Vanness Wu, Who Just Reunited With Jerry Yan On TV, Says He Was Relieved When F4 Disbanded

Remember the big F4 comeback that everyone was looking forward to in 2020 that didn’t actually happen as only one member showed up to perform in person?

Well, Chinese variety show Welcome Back to Sound actually managed to do what the Jiangsu TV 1001 Night Festival couldn’t and invited two members to come join them in the flesh.

In the latest episode, Jerry Yan, 45, and Vanness Wu, 43, had a mini reunion of their own, and while Vic Chou and Ken Chu were absent, there was still plenty for them to talk about… and plenty of revelations to get the media and netizens talking.

Although the two of them greeted each other warmly and cracked jokes from time to time, reports described them as behaving a little “restrained”, with a “slightly awkward atmosphere” around them — which is pretty understandable ‘cos it’s apparently been a while since they last met.

According to Jerry, all four of them had a gathering at Vanness’ house, but the latter estimated that it was “at least four to five years ago”.

However, as the day went by, they naturally loosened up and became more relaxed and chatty, with Jerry even declaring that the show has “brought him closer” to Vanness.

“Since it’s been a long time since we last got together and we don’t always keep in touch, some things are bound to happen,” Jerry mused.

Host He Jiong then pointed out that the way F4 was formed was very unique: Instead of going through a period of training together like other bands, four complete strangers with different backgrounds were grouped together after the success of Meteor Garden.

“These are ‘friends’ that you did not choose,” he said. “The only choice you had was whether you wanted to continue with the group.”

This prompted Vanness to cautiously state: “If we felt more secure and could trust each other better back then, I feel like things might be different now.”

The star went on to admit that there were a lot of “negative emotions” among all the members, such as envy, jealousy, and feelings of unfairness.

“Actually, we weren’t particularly happy until the end,” he revealed.

When they went their separate ways in 2009, Vanness felt relieved and thought that it “should have” happened.

He Jiong attributed their not-so-pleasant experience to the fact that back then, nobody really knew how to manage such a hugely successful Asian boyband.

Still, Jerry had a very optimistic take on the whole thing, saying that if not for their experiences, they would have “a completely different future” (especially since he’s doing so well now).
