Viral maker of ‘Croon’ croissant launching S$2 mochi egg tart at Orchard Rd pop-up
The pop-up
8days.sg checks out the upcoming pop-up, which is still pending SFA approval for its targeted Apr 10 opening. It takes over Tiger Sugar’s Paragon outlet, and the space is decked out like a hip industrial kiosk with yellow pallets and trays.
$2 mochi croissant egg tart
According to Swish Rolls, the croissant egg tart is a “delightful pastry that combines the flakiness of a croissant with the creamy texture of egg custard”. It is baked on-site and comes in two iterations, Original and Mochi. The latter is stuffed with a chunk of house-made rice cake and sprinkled with gold flakes to distinguish it.
Unlike Hong Kong-style shortcrust egg tarts, this mod croissant version is more similar to a Portuguese egg tart, albeit smaller and more crumpled-looking. The rich, eggy custard goes well with the flaky croissant base, which is more crackly with stronger buttery flavour compared to Portuguese egg tarts’ wispy layers. Very interesting combination that surprisingly works.
We recommend going for the mochi egg tart, which has a sweet, chewy centre that makes this a much more satisfying snack to justify the calories. Both the Original and Mochi croissant egg tarts are priced $2 each (limited to a maximum of six pieces), and additional pieces will cost $2.50 each.
Croissant tart series
The pop-up will offer another series called Croissant Cups, little croissant nests that come in three flavours, Caprese, Croque Madame and Berries Cream Cheese (from $6.50 to $7.50 each).
The croissant ‘cups’ have a crispy, flaky base loaded with toppings like ricotta cheese, fresh tomatoes, basil leaves and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil (for the Caprese), savoury turkey ham, gruyere bechamel, mozzarella and a sunny side up egg (for the Croque Madame) and berry compote with cream cheese topped with granola streusel (for the Berries Cream Cheese flavour).
Cornflake honey croissant
A selection of Croons and Swish Rolls’ signature swiss roll cakes are also available at the pop-up, as well as a toasted cornflake-studded Cornflake Honey Croissant ($5) filled with vanilla custard.
Swish Rolls’ pop-up is at #B1-39/40 Paragon Shopping Centre, S238859 (for updated opening date, go to www.instagram.com/swishrolls.sg).
