Writer Of Hit K-Drama Penthouse Admits That The Show's Plot "Defies Logic"

You’ve probably heard of hit Korean drama Penthouse, which revolves around a bunch of super wealthy families and their children who go to an arts school. The drama is so popular, it’s now into its third season.

Right from the get-go, viewers were entranced by its unpredictable plot, which covers everything from murder, corruption, betrayal, bullying, adultery, kidnapping, and revenge. Lots and lots of revenge.

While the first season ended with rave reviews, the second season had some people expressing their displeasure at how ridiculous the storylines were getting.

One plot point saw a character who died after getting stabbed and pushed down the stairs and was even buried by her mother get magically revived. It was later revealed that she had been secretly rescued by someone and nursed back to health.

Penthouse's writer Kim Soon Ok recently revealed in an interview that she’s aware that her plot “defies logic” at times, admitting that viewers could get confused by how some “supposedly dead characters come back to life as if their zombies”.

“I’ve received an offer from a gaming company that wanted me to promote their game where characters are constantly revived (…) Maybe it’s because it fits perfectly with [my characters] who never die and manage to live through anything, laughed Soon Ok.

Netizens have pointed out that the sheer ridiculousness of the plot is what keeps them going back for more.

“The entire drama doesn’t make sense so I don’t think there’s a problem with a few characters coming back to life (…) However, the drama should be classified as a comedy makjang rather than a thriller makjang now.”

'Makjang' refers to shows that are so ridiculous their storylines are highly unlikely to exist in the real world.

Another fan of the show added: “Penthouse is the only show where I can root for someone who’s supposed to be dead. I’m the type who cries over my favourite character dying, but for Penthouse, I can pray for them to make a magical return 'cos it might actually happen.”
