This Yanxi Palace Actress Just Embarrassed Herself On The Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet
She was asked by the photographers to get out of the way.
The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is a super glam affair where the world’s biggest stars show up in their most extravagant outfits. In recent years, the Cannes red carpet has been taken over by Chinese stars, like glamazons Fan Bingbing and Gong Li and their Oriental-chic gowns that have stolen the show from their Hollywood counterparts.
Their sartorial success has inspired a lot of people, namely C-lists starlets and online personalities who are dying for a piece of the attention.
The opening red carpet of this year’s Cannes Film Festival was of course filled with wannabes, but none made an impression more than Chinese actress Shi Yanfei, who is best known for her role as Gao Gui Fei's conniving palace maid Zhi Lan in Story Of Yanxi Palace.
The actress, who somehow scored an invite to the event, had overstayed her welcome on the red carpet so much that the photographers began yelling at her to get out of the way. But she managed to tune out their howls of anger and continued posing for photos even though at this point, no one was taking her pic anymore. It was then that one of the ushers approached her to get her to leave the red carpet. But the actress ignored the usher's request, gave her a blank look and resumed posing for non-existent cameras.
When news of Yanfei’s red carpet faux pas made it back to China, Chinese netizens immediately lambasted the actress. “She has embarrassed us overseas, this time I’m really angry”, wrote one incensed netizen. “It’s the same kind of news every year, these actresses are really embarrassing us out there,” wrote another. “And what’s her reason for being at Cannes?” wondered one netizen.
This morning, Yanfei went on Weibo to clarify what happened. “I wasn’t even fully awake when my team dragged me out of bed. When they told me that my name was one of the most–searched topics online, I felt secretly delighted. But when I went online, I was a little bit shocked. This is what happened yesterday. I believe everyone who has walked the Cannes red carpet will feel very overwhelmed and nervous, and I am no different. Yesterday, there were a lot of reporters from different publications and they were very noisy. The overseas photographers were very enthusiastic and they kept shouting for more pictures. So when one of the organisers was talking to me, I really couldn’t hear what she was saying. Even now, I don’t know for sure if I got chased off [the red carpet].” She then ended her post with eight crying face emojis.
Still doesn’t explain what she was doing at Cannes.
