What factors matter most to Singaporeans when choosing contact lenses? Studies have shown that convenience, comfort and aesthetics take precedence. Hence, it comes as no surprise that leading manufacturers consistently refine their offerings to ensure optimal wearability.

Japanese eyewear giant OWNDAYS has taken things a notch further with its in-house hydrogel contact lens range, Clear Vision, launched in 2018. Mr Danny Toh, an optometrist trainer at OWNDAYS, highlights that the brand’s adoption of advanced eye care technology has given rise to a collection that distinguishes itself not just through its utility, but also through its commitment to preserving the wearer’s eye health. To cap it all, Clear Vision lenses are reasonably priced, starting from just S$30 for a box of monthly or daily lenses.

COMFORT AND UV PROTECTION

Clear Vision contact lenses elevate comfort by harnessing the hydrating benefits of hyaluronic acid.

Clear Vision lenses are enriched with moisture-retaining hyaluronic acid to ensure up to eight hours of comfortable wear. Mr Toh explained that the compound extends lens wear time by enhancing water retention, minimising tear evaporation, reducing protein absorption on the ocular surface (the outermost layer of the eye) and promoting uninterrupted blinking.

In addition, Clear Vision lenses are able to block 80 per cent of UVA rays and 95 per cent of UVB rays. In a sunny climate like Singapore, UV protection is vital as prolonged sun exposure can heighten one’s susceptibility to conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium (growth on the eye’s surface). “Taking proactive measures like using UV-coated contact lenses can help safeguard eye health in the long run,” said Mr Toh.

CLEAR VISION, ADVANCED

Since introducing the line, OWNDAYS has broadened the Clear Vision range to include lenses such as Clear Vision Advance, notable for its improved oxygen permeability due to its composition.

Mr Toh pointed out that the silicone hydrogel lenses enable enhanced oxygen delivery to the cornea compared to traditional hydrogel lenses. “Improved oxygen flow not only promotes corneal health but also reduces the risk of corneal swelling, ulcers and other related complications,” he said.

Moreover, the Advance line features a hydrophilic hydrogel coating that helps reduce protein deposits, minimising the potential for eye irritation. Mr Toh explained: “The moisture-rich environment maintains a smooth lens surface that discourages the adhesion of deposits.”

As such, Clear Vision Advance is an ideal choice for individuals with dry eyes or sensitive eyes. Additionally, this lens series offers enhanced tensile strength, ensuring increased resistance to chipping and tearing.

MANAGING BLUE LIGHT EXPOSURE

Clear Vision Blue daily lenses are designed to alleviate eye strain caused by electronic devices through blue light filtration.

Statistics show that Singaporeans spend 1,554 minutes a day in front of screens for recreational purposes alone. In the digital era, prolonged screen time equates to frequent exposure to blue light. Excessive blue light exposure can result in retinal damage and age-related macular degeneration.

To protect your eyes, Mr Toh recommends wearing Clear Vision Blue daily lenses, designed to filter out up to 15 per cent of blue light in the 400nm to 450nm range. Exclusive to the Singapore market, these lenses can mitigate eye strain and fatigue caused by electronic devices, and help to improve focus.

LENS AND EYE CARE ESSENTIALS

OWNDAYS places a strong emphasis on quality and materials in its Clear Vision contact lens range.

While the OWNDAYS’ Clear Vision collection is designed with the wearer’s eye health in mind, Mr Toh emphasises that adhering to best practices for contact lens use and maintenance is essential for ocular health.

For monthly lenses, it’s important to follow the recommended replacement schedule to prevent lens deterioration and eye infections. Lenses should also be placed in a clean storage case filled with fresh disinfecting solution. Reusing old stock could lead to an increased risk of eye infections and further complications, cautioned Mr Toh.

He recommends going for regular eye examinations with a trusted eye care professional to monitor eye health and ensure precise contact lens fitting.

“And if you experience persistent pain, tearing, redness or unexplained blurred vision while wearing contact lenses, do seek prompt medical attention,” he added.
